Barbara C. Beattie

Barbara Criswell Beattie,72, of Carmel passed away Friday November 23,2018. Born November 9,1946 in Louisville, KY to Reverend Harold and Ola Criswell. She was a 1964 graduate of Arlington High School, BA from the University of Evansville 1968 and MS from IU in 1975. Barbara was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Kappa Pi international art honor society and Phi Delta Kappa International.
She taught art in Lawrence and Washington Townships, Greenfield Central High School, Park Tudor High School, IUPUI, Marian University and the University of Indianapolis. She was given the teacher of the year award by Greenfield school systems and named to Who’s Who of America’s Teachers in 2000. She taught from 1968-2012
Barbara and her students won numerous awards in all genre of art. Her students won awards in everything from Scholastics Art Competitions and the 500 Art Festival to the Prelude Awards. Her Park Tudor students were the first school to be invited to have a showing at IU’s Matrix Gallery.
She was awarded grants and scholarships from the IU Artistically Talented Program and from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, amongst others. Barbara was one of the first Inductees into the Alliance of Young Artists and Writers Gold Key Society. Some of her awards were: IVAE from the Getty Center for Education in the Arts. William Spacey Distinguished Teacher, and recognized by Public Service Indiana. She was a presenter at many conferences such as The College Boards and Art Education Association. She also helped establish National Art Honor Society chapters in Indiana. She was also an evaluator for the North Central Association of Colleges of Schools, as well as being involved in Butler University program of Teachers Teaching Teachers.
Barbara particularly enjoyed the furthering of Advanced Placement curriculum’s in schools throughout the Midwest. She had a profound effect on many of her students. If teachers were paid by the hour, no school would have been able to afford her as a teacher.
Barbara was a member of Old Bethel, Union Chapel, and St. Marks United Methodist Churches. She served on many committees of Old Bethel and Union Chapel, but what she enjoyed most were liturgical arts, hand bells and choir.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 50 years Stephen, and her two wonderful children Todd and Heather Beattie.
Family and friends will gather Sunday December 9, 2018 at 3pm for a Celebration of Barbara’s Life at Union Chapel United Methodist Church located at 2720 E. 86th Street Indianapolis, IN.
