Philip W Parmelee

March 7, 1943 - August 28, 2018

Philip W. Parmelee, 75, of Zionsville, Passed away August 28, 2018 peacefully in his home. He was born March 7, 1943 to Philip and Lucille [Aitchison] Parmelee.

Philip grew up on the south side of Chicago where he delivered groceries, ran a paper route, and became a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears, Blackhawks, and Cubs. Upon graduating from Chicago Vocational High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. When Philip returned home, he started his career as a pipe-fitter/welder apprentice. He later decided to pursue a career in retail at a department store where he worked his way up to Housewares Department Manager and eventually became a District Manager for National Presto Industries and was transferred to Louisville KY. It was there that he became a volunteer fireman, and began his love for serving his community. Philip then joined Ingersoll Rand. Fate served him in the form of downsizing the company, and he started serving as a reserve police officer in 1974, with the Zionsville Police Department. In 1977 he became a full time officer. Philip graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1978 and was promoted to Police Chief in 1980. He would resign in 1992 and later join the Indiana War Memorial Police Department. He loved his career so much that he continued as a civilian employee of the War Memorial after the merge with the Indiana State Police until he retired in 2009. Philip enjoyed his 40+ years of service, especially when it came to assisting the youth of our town. Philip always felt as though it was a mission as a police officer to help kids through tough times. He loved his job and was very grateful that he never had to shoot anyone in the line of duty. He looked forward to what his future endeavors would hold. Philip so valued being an officer, he would finish out his service as a Lieutenant volunteering with the Southport P.D.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley; Daughters, Tawnya Marshall [Brian], Patricia Yurek [George], Darlene Cotner [David], and Kimberly Parmelee; Sisters, Sharon Folga [late Tom], Patricia Richards [Jerry], and Margaret Higgins [Jack].
